Project Overview
Year:
2008
Location/Region:
North America / Gulf of Mexico
The Thunder Hawk field, located on the Gulf of Mexico's Mississippi Canyon Block 734, is situated 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of New Orleans. The field is located in ultra-deepwater at a depth of 5,724 feet (1,745 meters. Discovered on Oct. 27, 2006, well No. 1 ST1 was drilled by the Transocean Marianas semisub, which encountered 300 feet (91 meters) of net oil pay in two high-quality reservoir zones. A second well was drilled in 5,716 feet (1,742 meters) of water, and encountered more than 500 feet (152 meters) of net pay in two high-quality sands, verifying the previous discovery. Shortly after the discoveries, the field was deemed commercially viable for field development with estimated recoverable reserves of 50 to 80 MMboe.
